The Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (D.P.E.S.S.) of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science at the Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.) has many years of experience (since 1988) in the study organization of the third cycle initially in accordance with the provisions of laws 1268/1982 (FEK A’ 87) and 2083/1992 (FEK A’ 159), later through the doctoral course:

  1. of the Department’s Graduate Studies Program (Y.A. no. B1/228/26.3.1993 – FEK 240/8.4.1993 vol. B’ and Y.A. amendment no. B7/318/4.6.1998 – FEK 633/24.6.1998 t. B’).
  2. of the bi-institutional Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program in “Exercise and Quality of Life” of the Democritus University of Thrace and the University of Thessaly Physical Education and Sports Science Departments (Y.A. no. 43320/Β7/18.06.2002 – FEK 825/02.07.2002 v. B

then from the academic year 2009-2010 in accordance with the provisions of Law 3685/2008 (FEK A΄ 148)

From the academic year 2017-2018 the third cycle of studies in the Department of Physical Education Science includes the Doctoral Thesis preparation and concludes with the Doctoral Degree awarding in accordance with the provisions of Law 4485/2017 (FEK A΄ 114) and the relevant provisions and decisions in force.

The studies for obtaining a Doctorate Diploma provide specialization in the fields of knowledge of the Department of Physical Education Science, but also in related fields.

The Regulations for Doctoral Studies (FEK 462/ vol.B’/14.02.2018) as amended and in force (FEK 2592/ vol.B’/28.06.2019) refers to the process of accepting the doctoral candidate, in evaluation of his progress and the completion of his doctoral thesis as well as the study rules, obligations and rights.

The provisions of Law 4485/2017 also apply to doctoral candidates who have been accepted before its entry into force, provided that the Seven-Member Examining Committee has not been appointed.

Those Department’s doctoral candidates who have exceeded the maximum doctoral thesis duration at the publication time of the Doctoral Studies Regulation, are required to complete it by the end of the academic year 2022-2023, in accordance with the predetermined academic requirements as defined in the year study program of their introduction.

After the end of the maximum duration of the preparation of a doctoral thesis, the doctoral candidates are deleted from the list of doctoral candidates of the Department.

It should be noted that, among other things, doctoral candidates are required each year, within a deadline set by the Regulations for Doctoral Studies: a) to make an oral presentation and submit a detailed written memorandum before the three-member committee advisory committee regarding the progress of their doctoral thesis and b) to renew their registration.
